Self-Help Tip #30: Do Some Chanting

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT Medical advice. Please read disclaimers.

Many spiritual traditions incorporate chanting - "a rhythmic and repetitive form of singsong speech, often conducted as a meditative ritual." For example, you could chant "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" as part of the "Soka Gakkai tradition" . . . or the names of Indian Gods, during the call and response known as "Kirtan" - (My favorite being Krishna Das). But if you're trying chanting for the first time, best to keep it simple:

  1. Get comfortable
  2. Take deep breaths
  3. Try to clear your mind
  4. Start chanting . . . (The simplest sound to start with is "OM" -which is often chanted at the beginning and/ or end of yoga classes). This 3 minute video can help you get started . . .

Om Shanti!
